Riding off road rentals at the Imperial Sand Dunes is an amazing experience, one that you're unlikely to forget anytime soon. This dune system stretches for almost 40 miles, making it one of the biggest in the country. Some of the dune crests reach an astounding 300 feet or even higher. The Imperial Sand Dunes were created when the wind blew the beach sand from the long gone Lake Cahuilla. The location offers a variety of amazing features, including glimpses of rare species of animals and plants; beautiful scenery perfect for photography or simply admiring the landscape; and a quiet solitude far from the noise and bustle of Southern California cities. And, of course, the Imperial Sand Dunes recreation area is a fantastic playground for off-road highway vehicles. The portion of the dunes that is located to the south of State Road 78 is especially popular with OHV enthusiasts. There are BLM campgrounds nearby with parking, bathroom facilities, and trash. There is also a local ranger station that can provide help on weekends during the winter and spring.
